What is UL-142?

UL-142 is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for shop-fabricated aboveground steel tanks storing flammable and combustible liquids. A UL-142 listing certifies the tank's steel thickness, weld construction, venting, and structural design were built and tested to the standard. Fire marshals, air districts, and insurers across California expect it on aboveground fuel storage.

Single-wall vs. double-wall

A double-wall UL-142 tank is a tank within a tank. The outer wall provides built-in secondary containment — if the inner tank leaks, the interstitial space captures the product, and a monitoring port lets you detect it.

Choose double-wall when:

• The tank stores petroleum products and your facility falls under EPA SPCC rules (aggregate aboveground storage over 1,320 gallons)

• You want to avoid building a separate concrete containment berm

• Your county fire authority or air district requires integral secondary containment

A double-wall tank typically costs 30–50% more than single-wall but eliminates berm construction and simplifies SPCC compliance — usually the cheaper total-project option.

• SPCC plans (federal, enforced statewide): Facilities over 1,320 aggregate gallons of oil products need a Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure plan. Double-wall UL-142 tanks satisfy the secondary containment requirement.

• APSA: California's Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act adds state-level registration and inspection for tank facilities at or above 1,320 gallons, administered by your local CUPA.

• Fire code: Your local fire authority approves tank siting, venting, and setbacks. Vertical vs. horizontal configuration can change setback math — confirm before ordering.
